January 2026 Mayor's Message

  • Dec 30, 2025
  • 1 min read

One of the challenges in government is the change that comes with elections. Linda Hall and Howard Wade have served this community well for many years and I have been

honored to work closely with them both. Citizens may not realize the many hours of behind the scenes work that our dedicated Council members put in on their behalf, all for

the benefit of our Village. In addition to their overall efforts, Linda worked especially hard on safety issues, and Howard’s passion was Village beautification.

I look forward to having the opportunity to work with Karl Frybarger and Greg Holben as they start their new assignments. I know every single member of Council has a desire to work for the Village and its residents. Happy New Year!

This kind of message is short, but it’s doing something important: reminding people that council isn’t just a once-a-month vote, it’s a bunch of unglamorous legwork. I’m hoping the new folks keep the momentum on the “boring” stuff like maintenance and lighting, because that’s what adds up over time. Total aside, reading “new assignments” made me think of those style planners where you swap things in and out—like https://stylelooklab.com—same idea of adjusting and iterating, just way lower stakes than running a village.

The safety vs. beautification split is kind of perfect because those are the two sides of “quality of life” that people argue about all the time. Personally I’m in the camp that you can’t do the fun stuff if folks don’t feel safe walking around at night, but the town looking cared-for matters too. On a lighter note, the “Happy New Year” sign-off gave me the same cozy vibe as those artsy photo filters floating around (I saw https://imgg.ai/styles/ghibli the other day), which is probably not what the mayor intended, but here we are.

I like seeing outgoing council members recognized by name instead of the usual vague “thank you for your service.” Beautification in particular is one of those things that sounds fluffy until you see how much it affects pride in the town (and even whether people pick up trash). Funny enough, the whole “new assignments” vibe reminds me of product directories where you list what you’re working on—like https://hrefgo.com—even though that’s obviously a completely different universe than village council.

The line about “many hours of behind the scenes work” is so true—people only show up when something goes wrong, not when stuff quietly goes right. I’m curious what “safety issues” meant in practice (police staffing? crosswalks? lighting?) because that’s one of those buckets that can be a hundred different projects. Totally unrelated, but the “behind the scenes” phrasing made me think of this site where you can see how a simple shift changes everything.
