Summer Time In WJ

After all the 2020 shutdowns, West Jefferson residents were ready to get out and about in 2021! Food trucks and the Farmer’s Market were back in action!

This year the Parks and Recreation department sponsored Movies in the Park, Friday Night Uptown, Fishing Derbies and partnered with Batelle for the Lunch and Learn program. Garrett Park is being renovated, and cooling off at the pool was another welcome change this year.

Summer also brought much needed road construction. All the dust and detours will soon be finished.

In May, West Jefferson had the privilege of having The Wall That Heals drive through our community, and many stood in the rain to honor our Veterans as the truck and motorcade passed by.

In June, the community came together once more to completely renovate and restore the Veterans Memorial Park.

July brought the WJ Street Fest, including a parade, and awesome fireworks!

The Ox Roast will be back for 2021! Thanks for a great summer!

Mayors Message

We are getting to that exciting time of year when summer is starting to wind down, and everyone starts looking to fall. School will start this month on August 18. Some major projects in the Village are reaching completion, including a much-anticipated overhaul of Garrett Park and several extensive, at times very inconvenient road construction projects. The new Moen building is rapidly taking shape, and other building projects are anticipated to break ground soon. Main Street has some new shops opening for business, and the weekly Farmer’s Market will soon be switching from tomatoes and zucchini to apples and pumpkins.

But before fall is officially here, we still have National Night Out on Aug. 3, Uptown Friday Night on Aug. 6, more Lunch and Learn days until Aug. 12 and a few more chances to swim at the pool.

Labor Day weekend is fast approaching which means it is almost time again for the West Jefferson Ox Roast. After having to be cancelled in 2020, the Ox Roast is back, including a parade down Main Street, the Ox Roast Queen and her attendants, and all the wonderful food, contests, and other activities. You still have time to get involved by contacting the Ox Roast Committee at Westjeffoxroast.org, or their Facebook page, West Jefferson Ox Roast.

Have a great month!
