Mayors Message
Here in the Village, spring is in the air! One sure sign that I appreciate is when all the downtown flower pots get their new spring makeover. Another is being able to leave the coats at home, and bringing out the picnic baskets! We have beautifully renovated Garrette Park just about completed, and have started the renovations at Westwood Park, so everyone will have some new favorite picnic and playground options.
After last year’s successful Shop Hop, this month there will be a Spring Shop Hop on the 27th of March at the Community Center, and next month we will have our traditional Community Egg Hunt on April 16th at Converse Park. Two weeks earlier, on April 2nd we will host the Sensory Friendly Egg Hunt at the Community Center. Last year the Easter Bunny agreed to come back for another visit, and rumor has it that he will be here for both egg hunts, so plan on bringing your kids for some great fun.
The Village is working on purchasing and installing a new electronic sign, which should be up and running soon. Our old sign was a wonderful addition, but the parts have become obsolete, and the best decision was to replace it.
New park equipment and electronic signs don’t change the core of what makes this such a great place to live, but they do reflect positive change and help us shape a great future for our community and everyone who calls West Jefferson home.
Around the Village in 2022
Lori Ritter and Public Service employees The first weekend in February started a little early for some, and was nonexistent for others due to a storm that started out with rain, turned to ice, and ended up with snow. Because of the rain, the roads couldn’t be salted prior to the ice and snow, but the Public Service Department rallied to clear the streets during the Level Two Snow Emergency. Mayor Martin heard from one Madison County official that West Jefferson had the best roads (after the storm) in the entire county. Residents Lori and Scott Ritter thought so as well, and treated the crew to a thank you lunch.
Amazon
From the Madison Messenger
CMH4 Amazon donated $7,000 in personal and household items to 30 Norwood Elementary families. The items included: vacuum cleaners; winter coats; health care items such as shampoo, toothbrushes, toothpaste and deodorant; pillows and pillow covers; blankets; socks; underwear and sweatpants.“ We talked about several options, but these were items they don’t necessarily get but things they need,” said Principal Sue Barte. “(Amazon) reached out to me because they wanted to do something for the community.”
Sweetheart Dance
The Sweetheart Dance, and event for K-5th grade, raised over $900 for the Humane Society of Madison County. Special Events and Recreation Manager Shelton Stanley said, “Whenever we do things like this, it’s nice to be able to give to different types of organizations in need.”
Kaden Clay and Ella Sparks were crowned the prince and princess of the evening, but they were only two of about 200 children who attended the event, along with 100 or so parents and other adults. Stanley was pleased with the community’s response. “Seeing the amount of kids who showed up and seeing them have fun is great. It’s just been a great thing for the community.”
